Religious and political spheres in Ukraine are tightly connected. One\n of the fields where such deep connection can be observed is memory \npolitics. This aspect of the role of religion and of concrete churches \nin dealing with the past, though, is understudied both in memory \nresearch and in the studies of religion. Previous research on memory and\n religion was dedicated to specific questions in realm of theology or \nhistory. What is lacking is interdisciplinary research which would shed \nlight on complex role of religion and churches specifically in dealing \nwith the past. In his review of my book on memory politics in Ukraine, \nPer Arne Bodin underlined that a specific study should be undertaken to \ndevelop the thesis on the role of the religion and religious \ninstitutions in memory politics (Bodin 2015). The aim of my study is to \ndeepen the knowledge on the role of religion in Ukraine in the process \nof formation of collective memory on the example of remembrance of the \nSecond World War. The project concentrates on three main aspects which \nshed light on the role of the church and the religion in the process of \nre-evaluating the past. The first aspect is the role of religion per se \non the formation of collective memory. Secondly, I aim to look at the \nrole of each of the main churches in Ukraine in the process of \nre-evaluation of the past\u2013 Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow \nPatriarchate (UOC MP), Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate \n(UOC KP), Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC), and Greek \nCatholic Church (GCC). Thirdly, I will look on political engagement of \ntheses churches and the clergy and how this political engagement is \nrelated to the activities dedicated to re-evaluation of the past as well\n as how they are received by the \u201caudiences\u201d to whom these politics is \naddressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taking into consideration the recent situation in \nUkraine, whereas the country is involved in the conflict with Russia, \nsuch study is even more topical as at the times of crisis the role of \nreligion is re-actualized and the churches\u2019 political potential is \nmobilized. It should be added that during the turbulent times of Orange \nRevolution in 2004 and of Euromaidan in 2013\/2014 churches became highly\n politicized and this politicization was often performed on the terrain \nof memory politics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"template":"","class_list":["post-608","project","type-project","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
