Gender and Sexuality in Eastern, Central and Southern Europe: Nordic cooperation (GenCSEEx)

Field: Gender Studies
Project leader: Ramona Dima
Starting year: 2025
Project type: Research network
Total funding: SEK 150,000

The aim of GenCSEEx is to initiate a network of Nordic-based scholars, artists, and activists whose work relates to gender and sexuality in Central and Southeastern Europe (CSEE). The network will serve as an international research hub capable of responding to the dynamic changes in the field. GenCSEEx network will be a source of expertise on gender relations, gendered and sexualised migration, gender and sexual politics, feminist and LGBTI+ activism, anti-gender- and homophobic backlashes in the Nordic and Baltic regions and CSEE, connecting researchers with more resources with activists and grassroots entities, across generations and across regions. The imminent need for such a network is grounded in the extremely rapid anti-gender, social and political changes happening in the target regions. ÖSS funding will enable the network to have a first in-person workshop (Resistance to anti-gender mobilisations in CSEE) in a series of three, with the aim of coagulating the network. This event is dedicated to gathering 25 scholars for two days at Södertörn University in Stockholm in May 2026. Beyond setting the fundament of the network, this workshop will also plan future collaborations which include joint project applications, panel presentations at conferences, and joint publications. The consequent workshops will include a larger participation (approx. 40 persons), including that of artists and activists working with issues related to CSEE.
