The aim of this project is to initiate comprehensive scientific research on the past and present developments of the Swedish speaking colonies in Ukraine. This particularly focuses on Gammelsvenskby since elderly people there still speak a unique dialect of Swedish. The basic goal is to reconstruct, analyze and contextualize the history, ethnicity, linguistic changes as well as official and popular attitudes towards Swedish citizenship and belonging.
